458 Express

Recoil

.458 Express vs. .450 Rigby.

In the above example calculation I calculated the recoil for 3x different bullet weights, ranging from 475grains up to 550 grains.

It is taken for granted that the rifle weight is staying constant for all three loads and that the velocity required is 2250fps from the relevant loads.

It is clear that the 550 grain ammunition would generate significantly more recoil at 70FtLbs vs. 46 FtLbs with the 475 grain load.

The means a 49% increase in recoil, yet only 16% increase in bullet weight!!!

It is more interesting to note that the 475 grain ammunition would use 78grains of propellant and the 550grain ammunition would use 110grains.

The increase of 41% more propellant would leave a bigger hole in your bank account and not on the target!
